Perimeter Security

Many SME’s and organisations rely on the basic router from their broadband provider i.e., BT, Virgin Media or an entry level router – like Draytek – with very docile perimeter protection, but this does not protect your internet network.  To protect the corporate network, Core Team One propose a Next Generation Firewall solution based on the Fortinet Security Fabric.

A FortiGate Next Generation Firewall (NGFW) replaces the existing router and governs all data transmissions in and out of the business network.  It controls the internet connection and handles bandwidth for data and voice to ensure smooth operation.

In addition, the FortiGate provides the following services:

  • Application Control
  • Antivirus (Network Layer)
  • SSL Inspection
  • Intrusion Prevention
  • Web Filtering
  • Endpoint Telemetry (for up to 10 devices)
  • Analysis and Reporting
  • SSL VPN for secure remote access

By protecting your Internet perimeter, any device that tries to access a known malicious website from within your data network will be protected by the NGFW.  Furthermore, the device supports multiple internal data networks to help you segregate your guest devices from your corporate network where your all-important data resides.

The primary function of the unit is to provide what we call compensating controls in light of GDPR.  So, in the event your organisation has a data breach and the ICO (Information Commissioners Offfice) ask how you are protecting your data and systems? your organisation can show it has invested in an industry-leading security system that does A, B, C, X, Y, Z.  This demonstrates your company has taken sensible steps to protect your data within the reasonable limitations of your business – i.e., your business does not have the security budget of the MOD or Microsoft.

The resulting toolset you gain from deploying this device does not change your day-to-day operations at all. However, it does give companies the ability to extend their security ring-fence to external endpoints, for example, to home workers using less secure home networks and wireless access points providing connectivity to Guests and Staff in a secure and audited manner. The FortiGate also delivers daily reporting on web usage statistics and external access.  Plus, it enables businesses to operate online with confidence knowing they are protected by industry leading security.

The FortiGate system integrates with your internal systems to provide a single-sign-on experience for remote access and to identify internal users and computers systems alike for simple management, reporting and alert response.
