Traditional vs Modern in the Workplace
A modern workplace can mean different things to different industries and different kind of workspaces. But for the most part, the modern workplace is defined by how it differs from the traditional, old-style workplace.
The Problems of the Traditional Workplace
To me I would say a traditional workplace is one that my parents or even grandparents worked in. No real flexibility on working hours, a formal office environment with a lack of digital technology and an adherence to old-school office values. Employees tend to get frustrated and become disengaged. A high number of employees become dissatisfied with their working environment resulting in poor attitude to work, and potentially therefore employee turnover is high.
In a traditional workplace, technology like digital connectivity and cloud computing hasn’t been implemented. Employees spend their workdays in a busy sometimes even crowded office environment. Productivity is measured by the number of hours that they work, rather than what they achieve. Communication tends to be poor, and information isn’t immediately accessible due to been stored on hard copies. It takes so long to allocate and access data that employees often find it difficult to complete reports and analytical task within the allotted time. The IT department if there is one is usually understaffed and underfunded. Struggling to do what it can with outdated technology.
How Modern Improves on Traditional
In contrast to the traditional workplace a modern workplace is more likely to be a casual or semi-formal environment.
Many people work remotely or have the option to do so along with flexible working hours. To still achieve the same level of efficiency they use cutting edge technology that allows employees to get their work done no matter where they are, whether it be in the office, at home, in a café or whilst travelling. With such a good robust IT department in place and a forward-thinking approach to technology means that employee have everything they need to work productively. How data is stored is a good reflection on whether you’re working in a modern or traditional workplace. In a modern workplace data is stored on the cloud, instead of or in addition to physical storage. This is easily accessible from any workplace device. Giving the employee more flexibility in their working day.
In these working conditions employees feel trusted, supported, and equip to get their work done. Employee engagement is high, and people are actively invested in what they do. Job satisfaction is high, attitude to work is good and therefore employee turnover is low.
How Microsoft 365 Can Help You Modernise Your Workplace
All workplaces can benefit from modernisation. In some workplaces, modernisation that is necessary is held back as they feel the appropriate changes are too difficult to make. They are concerned it will cost a lot of time and money. However, the truth is that modernisation doesn’t have to be that disruptive. For many workplaces, all it takes is the will to modernise, and a small investment in the right operating system and productivity software: Microsoft 365 Business Premium.
In a modern workplace two of the most integral facets are communication and collaboration. There are multiple ways that communication can happen. The software and tools they have access to helps them facilitate their collaboration. Microsoft 365 is the ideal office suite for both purposes, with apps such as Planner and Teams, that are specifically designed to help people communicate and collaborate with ease from any location.
Microsoft 365 Business Premium
Microsoft 365 Business Premium is an integrated software suite that includes the Windows operating system, along with Microsoft 365, and Enterprise Mobility + Security. Together, this set of software products can take a business from traditional to modern. Microsoft 365 has been purpose-designed and built for digital, cloud-based computing. While many software vendors have scrambled to add-on cloud capability to existing products, Microsoft instead designed 365 from the ground-up with the cloud in mind. As a result, it’s a highly flexible product that, when used in the workplace, can take every employee to new heights of productivity. With Microsoft 365, they can work on any compatible device, anywhere, at any time – making it the perfect productivity suite for flexible schedules and remote working.
The most important thing about a modern workplace is the higher level of security. When work is done and data is stored in the cloud, security is naturally a concern. So, every new Microsoft 365 update improves on and adds security features that help to protect both employees and company data. Each product in the Microsoft 365 suite has its own security features that detect and rebuff cyberthreats, to help protect valuable and sensitive information.
